At 7 a.m. Tuesday there had been .13 of an inche. of sleet and freezing rain. Winter came in with a bang. There have been a number of accidents where cars skidded on the ice, and some of the occupants were taken to the hospital. No reports from the Highway Patrolmen as yet. The Town of Tryon street crew did an outstanding job of sanding the streets. Late Monday afternoon when it began sleeting, they were out sanding the roads This is something that we take for granted. Year after year, the town and state crews are out in foul weather making it possible for us to travel in our cars. Poland said Monday two mines in the vital Silesian coal region have been seized by nearly 3,000 strikers who have been holding out underground since last week. The Landrum Fire Department met Monday night and elected the following officers: Joe Williams, chief; Charles Owens, 1st Ass't. Chief; Robert Blanton. 2nd Ass’t Chief; Bobby Justice, 3rd Ass’t Chief; Sec.-Treas., Bob Hamrick. C. 28782 Short Meeting The Tryon Town Council had a short meeting Monday afternoon. The Council approved condemnation ordinances for three houses that failed to meet the minimum housing codes. The Council approved a water adjustment for Audley Cole of Lake Lanier and denied a water adjustment for Roy Vehorn of Lynn. The Council authorized the Mayor to execute a lease agreement with Southern Railway for the Tryon Stairs and the pedestrian crossing. The Council approved a resolution requesting the N. C. Dept, of Transportation to widen the intersection of Hwy. 108 and Hwy. 176, in order that it would improve the safety at the corner. It’s Twins Mr. and Mrs. Judson Richards of Tryon are parents of twin sons, Eddie Judson and Neddie Tate, born Dec. 20th at St. Luke’s Hospital. A New Arrival Mr. and Mrs. James Williams of Landrum are parents of a daughter, Susan Elizabeth, born Dec. 19th at St. Luke’s Hospital. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Williams of Mill Spring. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Wilkerson of Landrum. WEDNESDAY, DEC. 23,1981 Retires Mrs. Ruby G. Jones Jackson & Jackson, Inc. of Tryon has announced the retirement of Mrs. Eugene Jones (Ruby). Mrs. Jones, a native of Polk County, is a graduate of Stearns High School, Columbus. She attended Cecil Business College in Spartanburg before joining Jackson & Jackson in 1945 Mrs Jones served in many capacities for the company. She was personal secretary of the late Nelson Jackson, in charge of inventory control, as assistant purchaser, and retired as vice president of the company. She has been active in the Tryon First Baptist Church for a number of years. She is married to Eugene M. Jones and they have two sons. Eugene, Jr and Timothy, and three grandchildren, Jessica. Lindsay and Michael Mr and Mrs. Jones make their home on Howard Gap Road, Tryon. Price 10c Per Copy Announces For District Attorney Stephen R. Little of Marion has announced his candidacy for District Attorney of the 29th Judicial District of North Carolina for Nov., 1982 elections. The 29th District includes Polk, McDowell. Rutherford, Henderson and Transylvania counties. A Republican, Mr. Little is a partner in the law firm of Carnes and Little, P.A. in Marion An honor graduate of Wake Forest University in 1973 he is a 1977 graduate of Wake Forest University School of Law. He is an active practicing attorney since 1977, with criminal and civil trial experience. He is a deacon and Sunday School teacher in the First Baptist Church of Marion and is president of the Marion Kiwanis Club. He is chairman of the Board of Trustees of Marion General Hospital and President, McDowell County Chapter of North Carolina Symphony He is a former member and chairman of Board of Directors, Agape House, Marion. Mr. Little is married to the former Alice Hobbs of Marion who teaches the 3rd grade. Mr Little was in Polk County last Saturday making contacts Steve Edney is at home for a two-week vacation from Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, Loma Linda, California. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Edney of Tryon.
